Norths: the Art, the Trip, the Book
March 16 - 18, 2018
Centre Square Mall (pop-up exhibition)
A book launch, art exhibition art artist talk celebrating a 6 month-long Northern Art-Residency Series by Alison McCreesh.
After becoming parents in 2015, Alison and her partner Patrice started planning a trip to experience The North at a larger scale. In October of 2016, when Riel was 18 months, they started on a winter long journey that would take them North of 60 in 6 of the 8 Circumpolar Nations. Through a combination of extended artist residencies and short side trips, they visited Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Greenland and Iceland. During the 6 months, Alison developed a new body of fibre art and worked on a mail-art based book project about the trip. Meanwhile Pat and Riel developed creative strategies for killing time indoors and roamed the streets on countless daily nap-walks.
Alison's book Norths; Two suitcases and a stroller around the Circumpolar World has been named one of '12 Comics to watch for in the first half of 2018' by CBC Books and her previous graphic novel Ramshackle won the NorthWords prize in 2016.

We acknowledge and respect that we live and work in Chief Drygeese territory. From time immemorial, it has been the traditional land of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.
