An exploration of Indigenous Design
Art and fashion by Cheryl Fennell
A tipi-shaped dress, a sealskin puffer jacket, upholstered stools, drum necklaces, and abstract tapestries are some of the creations featured in Néɂeréhdı. Cheryl Fennell’s bush couture fashions, seen on runways integrate fur, hide, and fish leather into modern styles, creating a unique cultural narrative.
Néɂeréhdı is a Dene word gifted to Fennell by Fibbie Tatti in North Slavey, meaning “your presence has been acknowledged by the ancestors.” This acknowledgment is central to her work, carrying a “deep and humbling realization that we bring our work from the invisible state to the visible, through assistance from the spirit world,” explains Fennell.

We acknowledge and respect that we are in the Chief Drygeese territory. From time immemorial, it has been the traditional land of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.
