Monuments: Bob Wilson
September 13, 2022
Yellowknife Visitor Centre Gallery
Bob Wilson is always able to show us versions of Yellowknife we might not have seen before - That’s the power of a good urban/ street photographer. In this new series, Bob Wilson shows us local monuments, in b & w (his blacks are like velvet in person) that are equal parts elegiac and pointed criticism. Our city’s monuments are dedicated to the military, to the rcmp, to the the mining and aviation industries. There’s only one (a totem pole) to commemorate Indigenous peoples. Totem poles, Bob points out, are not associated with any Indigenous peoples in the NWT.
Monuments was exhibited at the Yellowknife Farmers Market.

We acknowledge and respect that we live and work in Chief Drygeese territory. From time immemorial, it has been the traditional land of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.
