It's Time to Come Home
April 26 - July 25 2025
Yellowknife Visitor Centre Gallery
Curated by Laura Hodgins
What does home mean to you? How do you know when it’s time to come home?
The exhibition, It’s Time to Come Home, featured the work of 3 contemporary Dene artists, Jake Kimble, Laura Grier, and Hana Steinwand, who have never before exhibited their art in Denendeh. By assembling this trio, we aim to celebrate a homecoming of Dene creativity and introduce Yellowknifers to the wider Dene contemporary art scene.

Jake Kimble
The title, It’s Time to Come Home, derives from one of Jake Kimble’s pieces “When The Lights Come On That Means It's Time To Come Home” a cheeky self portrait under the northern lights. Jake Kimble (Dënesųłıné) is an artist and curator from Hay River who is now based in Vancouver. Kimble’s art practice revolves around acts of self-care, self-repair, and gender-based ideological refusal, working largely in photography (and humour).
Laura Grier
Laura Grier (Sahtu Délı̨nę) is an artist, printmaker and a PhD candidate at York University. Through traditional printmaking, Grier uses the power of the handmade to reflect Indigeneity, language, relational ontologies, and lived experiences of urban displacement and inherent Dene spirituality.
Hana Steinwand
Coming from Tłı̨chǫ Dene and mixed-settler descent, Hana Steinwand is a conceptual-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice is inspired by her cultural identity and topics of the traditional and contemporary.

We acknowledge and respect that we are in the Chief Drygeese territory. From time immemorial, it has been the traditional land of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.
