Downtown Yellowknife
August 7- 14 2023
Outdoor installation, 50/50 Lot, Downtown Yellowknife
Curated by Sarah Swan
A series of digital works by Katie O'Beirne
From the artist: Usually when I try to convince someone from “down south” that Yellowknife is great, I talk about the wilderness, the work-life balance, and the art and music scene. I struggle to describe the city itself. Perhaps the urbanness of a place so remote is inconceivable to people who haven’t seen it. Maybe the appeal of a northern town is in its proximity to wilderness, so that its streets, alleys, and high rises would be an afterthought, if thought of at all.
Because I can’t describe what makes me call this city beautiful, I’m drawn to draw it. In this series I hope to showcase the loveliness of this city, as a nod to those who know what I know, as a bid to those who don’t, and as an offering to Yellowknife itself.

We acknowledge and respect that we are in the Chief Drygeese territory. From time immemorial, it has been the traditional land of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.
