Icons and Archetypes:
Melaw Nakehk'o

September - November 2022

Yellowknife Visitor Centre Gallery

Icons & Archetypes was the first exhibition in Yellowknife Visitor Centre Gallery! Melaw Nakehk'o's large scale portraits of friends, family, and fellow activists often layer pattern on pattern, use collaged materials like string and metallic nail polish, and are a nod to street fashion.

Melaw's paintings are activist in nature. There is not enough representation in contemporary art of Indigenous people." she says. "The people I paint are indigenous, mostly women, all from the north, who have a distinct look. They are my friends and my family - interesting people who do inspirational things."

We acknowledge and respect that we live and work in Chief Drygeese territory. From time immemorial, it has been the traditional land of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.
