Far North Photo Festival
November 30th, 2019
YKARCC Mobile Art Gallery
In collaboration with the Far North Photo Festival, we brought the mobile gallery to Dettah!
This exhibit includes two distinct curations of photographers from above the 60th parallel. The first features artists from each of the northern territories in Canada as well as the circumpolar countries, demonstrating the unique perspective and diversity of photographers working across this region. By showcasing this work collectively, we aim to reorient the geographic consciousness of documentary photography across the Arctic, which is often viewed through a southern perspective. Each of the artists selected blends storytelling with culture and place with an authority that resonates with a deep understanding of subject matter that only comes from being "of" that place.
The second exhibit features work submitted by photographers across northern Canada, ranging from professionals to those at the beginning of their photographic practice. Photographers were asked to submit work that reflected their concept of "home" in the North. The result is a collective snapshot of life in the North, with submissions from across the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut.

We acknowledge and respect that we live and work in Chief Drygeese territory. From time immemorial, it has been the traditional land of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.
