Art, Power, and Social Change
November 7 & 8, 2018
Prince of Wale Northern Heritage Centre
In collaboration with Dene Nahjo, YKARCC presented a 2 evening seminar with
with visiting artists Jaime Black and KC Adams.
On Wednesday November 7, Adams and Black each gave an artist’s talk, sharing with audience members several highlights from their extensive bodies of work, their creative process and passion for social justice, and the myriad of critical responses their work has garnered.
On Thursday November 8, Black and Adams were joined by local artists Casey Koyczan, Tania Larsson, and Melaw Nakehk'o in a panel discussion moderated by Dene Nahjo's Mandee McDonald. Panelists discussed the artist’s role in social change, speaking about indigenous creativity as a powerful catalyst in decolonization processes.
YKARCC also presented: PERCEPTION, an anti-racism poster campaign by visiting artist KC Adams around Yellowknife. Adams is a nationally acclaimed, award winning Winnipeg-based artist. Perception is a series of photographic diptychs portraying individuals of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit ancestry. One half of the image contains a negative stereotype or racial slur, and the other half portrays the positive truth. Perception boldly challenges stereotypes of First Nations citizens, and stares down racism in the face.

We acknowledge and respect that we live and work in Chief Drygeese territory. From time immemorial, it has been the traditional land of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.
